A lively, colourful, exotic Guyanese capital

Discover Cayenne
& French Guiana

Come and discover Cayenne and the surrounding area! Capital of French Guiana, this colonial city steeped in history will transport you into Creole life with its colorful markets, museums and typical restaurants. A day rich in smells and flavors, to see and experience.

Start by discovering Cayenne's beaches, in particular Montabo beach, one of the most beautiful in the region and right next to the residence.

You can then spend a day on the Isles of Salvation off the coast of Kourou and immerse yourself in the history of Guiana's penitentiary system, following in the footsteps of Seznec and Papillon.

Afterwards, a guided tour of the Guiana Space Center. If by chance it's a launch day, you'll be able to experience Europe's conquest of space "live".

In Sinnamary, at the mouth of the river, the spectacle of the red ibis is magical at the end of the day. Not to be missed!

Experience adventure in the heart of the Amazon rainforest and spend the night in a carbet, sleeping in hammocks or beds. Many activities are on offer: botanical trails, introduction to gold panning, swimming, canoeing and kayaking...

The Kwa Marshes are a must-see, where you can admire a multitude of birds during the day, and at night there will be organized encounters with caimans.

Cayenne and the surrounding area are an ideal destination for an unforgettable vacation.

2

Crique Gabrielle

This cove is often described as the most beautiful cove in French Guiana, but it is also the closest to Cayenne (around 35km east of Cayenne).

This little creek flows into the Mahury, close to the Roura bridge. It meanders through a magnificent forest forming veritable green galleries, where you can admire moucou-moucous, moutouchis "marsh" and red mangroves recognizable by their stilt-shaped roots.

Many epiphytic plants, such as orchids and bromeliads, give birth on the branches of the trees. It's also an opportunity to discover morphos, legendary butterflies with phosphorescent blue wings.

Then the creek opens out onto a plain of swamp and flooded savannah, where you may be lucky enough to spot some of the local wildlife: cabiais, giant otters, herons, egrets and a host of other birds.

An excursion not to be missed.

Cayenne market

Three times a week, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, the Place du Coq hosts the Cayenne market.

Watermelons, Chayotes, Chadeques (a huge, delicious grapefruit), spices or liqueurs, you'll be tempted by all the local produce that colors and perfumes the atmosphere.

The covered market, built in 1907, is also packed with all these great specialities.

All around, you can settle in for a hearty soup, a specialty of the Hmong people (originally from Viet Nam, who are very present in French Guiana), until 2pm.

In a warm and friendly atmosphere, you'll be able to sample local products from our region, as well as from neighboring countries and even from far-off lands such as Brazil, Surinam, Laos and Haiti, where specialties abound.

More than just a place to shop, the Cayenne Market is a showcase for Guyanese culture.
